These are a few of my favorite (marketing) things

One of the things I love most about marketing is that it’s an evolving, ever-changing, fast-moving little thing. So part of a marketing nerd’s job is to try to keep up with all of it. Here are some of my favorite marketing things: tools, blogs, podcasts, etc. I’m always looking for new, inspiring marketing magic. Share your faves in the comments below, please and thank you!

Favorite marketing blogs and podcasts:

  • Moz: Great for all things SEO. I especially love Whiteboard Fridays. It’s a great way to keep on top of SEO trends without having to invest a ton of time.

  • Copyblogger: There’s a whole lot of writing in marketing. This blogs provides great tips for writing fresh and totally clickable copy.

  • Jenna Kutcher: This photographer-turned-small-biz-owner-turned-marketing-guru shares great tips, using her own brand as a case study. Her podcast, Goal Digger, is also super helpful.

  • Unbounce: For fans of conversion rate optimization.

  • Hubspot: Great but massive collection of content on all things digital/inbound marketing. I read it mostly for the templates, like this one.

  • Neil Patel: All things digital marketing. He has great tools like Ubersuggest (for Keyword Research) and this free Statistical Significance calculator.

  • Seth Godin: Inspirational content, sometimes related to marketing sometimes not. He’s probably the closest thing to a marketing celebrity.

  • Asana Blog: Great for all things time management and productivity.

Favorite marketing books:

  • Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion: A fundamental read for anyone interested in persuasion and psychology. It’ll help you become a better marketer and also learn to identify when others are trying to persuade YOU!

  • Building a Story Brand: Useful tips for new or seasoned copywriters and storytellers. Though the fact that they try to upsell you an expensive course is kind of annoying.

  • Measure what Matters: You might or might not know this about me, but I’m a bit obsessed with objectives and objective-setting. This book is fundamental to understanding OKRs and how the can change your business/life.

  • Your Ad Ignored Here: Because I just love marketing humor.

  • This is Marketing: Seth Godin’s latest and (maybe) greatest. Among many other things, he shares his thoughts for how marketing can be a force for good in the world (something I couldn’t agree with more).

  • How Brands become Icons: Essential reading for brand marketers.

  • Different: Escaping the Competitive Herd: Loved this book’s thesis around competitive herding. Very eye-opening.

Favorite marketing newsletters:

  • Dave Gerhadt: Great B2B marketing content. I’ve also heard his community is great (it’s $10 a month to join).

  • Marketing BS: Marketing strategy at its greatest (and funniest) from the former CMO of General Assembly.

  • TLDR Newsletter: Quick hit of marketing knowledge for those of us pressed for time.

  • Hubspot Newsletter: Comes a bit too frequently, but the content is great.
